Do I Have Insurance Coverage For My Rental Car?

The first official day of summer has passed and we are getting well into vacation season. Many travelers opt for using a rental car for their road trip vacation, either to get better gas mileage or to avoid putting a bunch of miles on their personal vehicle. When it comes to insurance, how do you know if you have proper coverage on that rental car? Keep reading to learn about rental car coverage from your Lake of the Ozarks insurance agent.

Standard Auto Insurance Policies

In general, if you have comprehensive and collision coverage on at least one car on your personal auto policy, you most likely have damage coverage on your rental car. However, if the rental car contract makes you responsible for the reduction in market value of the rental car after being repaired, you may not be covered under your personal Lake of the Ozarks auto insurance policy.

There are other coverage gaps to be aware of as well, including the rental car company's loss of business income while their vehicle is being repaired.  This loss of income is not like likely covered under your personal auto policy.

Please also keep in mind that if you are in an accident, your rental contract may allow the rental car company to max out or place a hold on your credit card until they are reimbursed, which could be very troublesome while away from home.  You may want to rent the vehicle on a credit card with a lower limit or at least have an additional card or cash available in the event you can not use your card. Read the contract and your policy to understand these types of potential problems or gaps in coverage.  In some cases it may be best to purchase the physical damage coverage available.

If you don't own a car and don't have any insurance coverage of your own, you will need to at least purchase supplemental liability protection from the rental car company and the physical damage waiver.

Credit Card Providers

One thing many people don't know is that some credit card companies will offer some insurance coverage when it comes to rental cars. If you use your card to pay for the rental car charges, check with your credit card company to see if they offer any coverage as part of your credit card agreement. This type of coverage is secondary, meaning that your own auto insurance policy will pay out first. If you don't have auto insurance, you'll want to call your credit card provider to check the details of your coverage before you rely on this coverage solely.

The best way to make sure you're covered for anything unexpected that might happen to your rental car while you're on vacation is to talk to your favorite insurance agent at the Lake of the Ozarks. We can take a look at your current policy and let you know what coverage you have under your personal auto policy. Enjoy your vacation with peace of mind knowing that Insure the Lake has you covered!

Steps to Take After a Home Burglary

Picture this: you come home from work to find the front door open and you realize that a burglar has been in your home. You've seen home burglaries in the movies, but you never thought it would happen to you. Luckily, your Lake of the Ozarks homeowners insurance, if you have proper coverage, should cover your loss. Your favorite independent insurance agent at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to advise you on the steps to after you've found your home has been burglarized.

Step 1: Call the Police.

Whether you were at home or out while the burglary happened, you should contact the police immediately. Don't touch anything until the police arrive; attempting to clean up could destroy evidence needed to catch the burglar. In addition, if the burglary happened while you were out, don't go inside until the police have arrived as the burglar could still be inside. You'll need to file a police report within 24 hours.

Step 2: Call Your Insurance Company.

After you've talked with the police, you need to call your Lake of the Ozarks insurance company. They are going to need a copy of the police report to validate your claim. After the police are done taking pictures and dusting for fingerprints, you can begin assessing the damage yourself. Your insurance company is going to need a detailed list of stolen and/or damaged items. This is where your home inventory checklist comes in handy, as it is extremely difficult to think of everything that's missing and its value while you're under emotional stress from the situation.

Step 3: Start Cleaning Up and Restoring Your Home.

Once you've made your lists, it's time to start cleaning up. Get rid of anything that is broken or unusable, and try to restore your home to as close as it was before the incident happened. When putting the ransacked rooms back together, consider rearranging furniture and moving things to new places. These small changes can go a long way in helping you overcome the emotional stress of the situation.

Step 4: Address Your Home's Security.

To help put your mind at ease, consider changing your locks. Add deadbolts if you didn't already have them. Other things you can consider doing include installing shatter-proof screen doors and a security system. By installing a security system, you could save money on your insurance premiums too! If you already have a security system, check for weaknesses and consider upgrading it.

In the event something happens to your home, whether it be a burglary or a natural disaster, it's important to be prepared. Make sure your insurance is up-to-date by reviewing it annually or anytime you make changes to your home and/or its contents, such as renovations or large purchases. At Insure the Lake, we can help you with all of your Lake of the Ozarks insurance needs - just give us a call at 573-348-2794.

Restaurant Insurance FAQs

Owning a restaurant comes with some added risks that many other business owners don't have to deal with. When it comes to insuring your restaurant, you probably have a lot of unanswered questions. As your Lake of the Ozarks insurance agent, I'm here to answer all your questions in regards to Missouri restaurant insurance. At Insure the Lake, we're here to help you make sure you and your business are covered! Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions about restaurant insurance:

1. My business doesn't sell very much alcohol. Do I need liquor liability coverage?

Even though you may sell only small amounts of liquor, you could still be pulled into a lawsuit. For instance, after a football game a group of people go to a few bars for drinks. Later in the night they end up at your establishment for food and an employee serves a drink to someone that is already impaired. An accident could result in your business being sued. Without liquor liability, you would likely be without coverage.

2. What types of payment plans are available?

You could potentially save hundreds of dollars in finance charges from your current brokered policy. Several of our carriers have monthly payment options with low monthly billing fees of around $5. Some carriers have automatic bank draft with $2 fees. We also have companies that offer credit card billing.

3. Do I need security cameras to have theft coverage?

Most companies will require you have a central station monitored alarm system to include coverage for theft. Some of our carriers automatically offer theft and will give a discount to you for installing anti theft security devices.

4. Am I required to have a service contract for my Ansul system cleaning?

Almost every carrier will require you have a contract for cleaning in place. Some are very diligent in following and obtaining these certificates. These companies typically offer more competitive pricing because of your loss control diligence.

5. I have several claims. Can I still get coverage?

Our agency works with multiple carriers, so if you are not eligible with one company we can look at others. We work with our customers to see how we can help lower claim frequency and severity so your losses look better at future renewals, which allows better pricing and more company options.

For any other restaurant insurance questions, give Insure the Lake a call at 573-348-2794. In addition to restaurant insurance, our Lake of the Ozarks insurance company can help with all aspects of both business and personal insurance.

6 Things You Can Do to Save Money on Your Homeowners Insurance

While homeowners insurance is required for anyone owning a home, there are some things you can do to save some money on your premiums. Your Lake of the Ozarks insurance agent is here to help you get the best value:

1. Increase Your Deductible.

The higher your deductible, the lower your insurance premiums. If you choose to go with a higher deductible, just make sure you can afford it in the event that a loss does happen. Saving more money upfront isn't always the best option if it's going to cost you more all at once.

2. Bundle Your Insurance.

Many insurers will offer discounts for having multiple policies with them. Look into different companies and see if they have any advantages to bundling your home policy and auto policy. Using an independent insurance agent is the best way to find out what types of discounts you might qualify for as they work with many different companies to find you the best coverage.

3. Make Your Home More Disaster Resistant.

Talk to your agent about ways to make your home more resilient against everyday perils. This could include: adding storm shutters, reinforcing your roof, adding earthquake brackets to your furniture, upgrading to new appliances, clearing brush and trimming back trees away from the house, and more.

4. Upgrade Safety Devices.

Having safety precautions for your home can reduce your insurance premiums. Consider installing new smoke detectors throughout the house and installing a security system and deadbolts to prevent burglary. Some safety devices have a steep upfront cost, so make sure the benefit of lowered premiums is worth it for your situation.

5. Keep Your Credit History Clean.

In many states, insurance agents use credit history as a factor in determining your premiums. Keep tabs on your credit score and watch for any red flags. In addition, start practicing good credit habits to keep your score from dropping. Not only could this help with your insurance premiums, but will be beneficial if you decide to refinance your home.

6. Go with an Independent Agent.

When you choose an independent insurance agent at the Lake of the Ozarks, you're going to get the best coverage at the best price. Unlike individual insurance companies, independent agents are able to "shop around" for the best deals for their clients. You can get multiple quotes from different companies to make sure you're getting the best value!

At Insure the Lake, we have direct contracts with 50+ insurance companies, with access to hundreds more through brokerage services. This allows us to shop the marketplace for the most comprehensive coverage at a competitive price. Give our Lake of the Ozarks insurance company a call at 573-348-2794 for more information on getting the best deal you can on your homeowners insurance.
