6 Tips for Filing an Insurance Claim

While most people hope they never actually have to make a claim, insurance coverage is there to offer protection. When it comes time to file that claim, do you know what to do? In today's blog, Insure the Lake offers a few tips for filing insurance claims.

1. Know Your Policy. 

Many people purchase an insurance policy because it's required and then it stays out of sight, out of mind until the need to file a claim arises. One of the most important things you can do is be aware of your insurance coverage. Whether it's auto or home insurance, make sure you know what is covered, what isn't covered and what your deductibles are. 2. File Quickly. 

In the event you need to file an insurance claim, be sure to do so quickly. Some policies require you to notify your agent within a certain time frame. You also want all the details of the claim to be fresh in your mind. For example, if you're involved in a car accident, the insurance companies are going to want to know a lot of details that can become hard to remember if you wait too long. 

3. Provide Complete & Accurate Information. 

When filing your claim, it's important that you describe the situation or event in as much detail as possible. You also want to make sure you provide complete and accurate information. Failing to do so could lead to a delay in your claim or even the possibility of being denied.

4. Keep Copies of All Correspondence. 

Any time you talk to someone about your claim, whether it be the other party involved, your insurance agent or their insurance agent, be sure to keep track of all the correspondence. Make a note of the date and time you talked to each person, as well as their name, title and what was said.

5. Ask Questions. 

If at anytime you don't understand something, be sure to ask questions. The insurance industry jargon can often be hard to decipher. This is why having the right insurance agent, one that is local and independent, is very important.  Having someone you trust, that you're able to discuss your insurance issues with face to face is very valuable.

6. Only Make Temporary Repairs. 

Many homeowners and auto insurance policies will cover the costs of temporary repairs that may need to be made in order to avoid further damage. Be sure to keep all your receipts of any temporary repairs. However, you will want to take pictures of any damage before making those repairs. You don't want to make any permanent repairs until after an adjuster has assessed the damage. Doing so could result in your claim being denied.
