What To Do After A Storm Hits

At the Lake of the Ozarks, we've been experiencing some severe weather lately. From wind storms to ice storms, you never know what mother nature is going to throw at us. In today's blog, your Lake of the Ozarks insurance agent offers some advice on what to do after a storm if you suspect storm damage to your home.

1. Have Your Home Inspected.

While major storm damage may be visible to the naked eye, other types of damage can only be determined through further inspection by a professional. Roof damage for example, may be minor at the time Many contractors offer free inspections to help you determine if repairs are needed after a storm hits. (Beware of storm chasers that will come to you looking for work though - instead call a local, reputable professional.) If your home has been damaged by a storm, you may have a limited time to file an insurance claim.

2. Call Your Insurance Agent ASAP.

If you're sure your home has sustained storm damage, whether it's visible or determined by an inspection, make sure to call your insurance agent as soon as possible. Hopefully you've already reviewed your coverage and are aware what your Lake of the Ozarks homeowners insurance covers and what it doesn't. Typically, your standard homeowners policy will cover damage from fire, hail, tornado, lightning and wind. However, it may not cover flood or earthquake damage. There are many different types of policies, featuring different levels of coverage, limitations and exclusions. It's always smart to check your policy annually to make sure you have adequate coverage.

3. Only Make Temporary Repairs.

If the damage is severe enough that you can't continue living there without doing something, be sure to only make temporary repairs until the claim is settled. Keep any receipts for temporary repairs you've made to protect your home from further damage. If you have to stay in a hotel for the time being, be sure to keep those receipts as well. You don't want to start the repairs before an insurance adjuster can come out or you might not receive the full insurance benefits available to you. In addition, if the insurance company is going to pay for the repairs, there's no advantage to doing the work yourself.

Don't wait for an emergency to review and understand your coverage. Set up a meeting with your local insurance agent in Osage Beach to discuss your current policy and see if there's any room for improvement.
